Quilt Club Challenge

Members of the Sun Bonnet Sue Quilt Club in Sequim have been challenged to make a "Quilt from the Pantry." What this means, in essence is that we must make a quilt based on the colors of a grocery store cardboard-boxed food item and we must incorporate at least one recognizable traditional block.  On its face, this doesn't seem so hard; however, we have to use the exact shade and colors that are on the box. We cannot add colors, nor can we change the value. And we must turn in the box with the quilt.

So...this is what I have come up with so far:

The first would be somewhat monochromatic (its a stretch) using this Jello box and mainly the greens.

The second is softer, using the Oatmeal box, with all the colors it contains.

Okay, so I have my fabric and my boxes--the problem now becomes what block and/or blocks and what to do. If this turns out like my other challenges, it will either stay in the planning stage forever and/or get made after the due date.

Any ideas??  Anything???

  1. Ok, if this is a duplicate comment I apologize. . . I hit "publish" but don't see the message or a moderation note.

You did not say whether there was a size element to the final piece. . . . so perhaps my ideas won't work.

For the Jello box I could see Shoo Fly blocks with the darkest color as the border.

If you like to be "cheeky" you could use the fabrics in the oatmeal box to make house blocks with red doors (growing up I was always told that houses with red doors were not good hourses to go to!).

Do you think that you group would mind if I used their idea for my quilt guild? Our guild does not meet officially in July or August so this might be a good challenge to get everyone revved up for the next year that starts in September.

I can't wait to see what you come up with.

    1. Hi Sherry, nope, only one post so no apology necessary! I LOVE your ideas. I had been trying to come up with a "homey" idea for the oatmeal box and just like magic, you hit the nail on the head! Now I'm thinking "wonky" house block with either flying geese or different pieced blocks around the outside...sort of ala Mary Lou Weideman. Size is 120" perimeter and I don't think the guild would mind at all. In fact, if you want to send me an e-mail *crazyhorsequilting@gmail.com* with yours, I'll forward you the actual flyer. Dory

  2. HA! I just logged in to tell you to use "shoo fly" blocks!! Great minds think alike, I guess. Personally I love the red/green combo because (1) I LOVE red and (2) I LOVE Jello...........what can I say? You know how I am.

  3. Now you've got me thinking whether I should submit two blocks...wonder if that's against the rules???
